STARRING IN SAFER BY SARAH JANE DICKENSON

Back in August 2023, I was contacted by Lucy Fielding to join her as one of two cast members in Safer by Sarah Jane Dickenson. Safer was born out of interviews and real experiences of the Hull Roundheads, an inclusive rugby union team in Hull.

Over a year later, I am still touring the show here, there and everywhere. We've performed it to packed audiences, we've performed it to audiences of two people, we've performed it to emotive audiences, we've performed it to hostile audiences - we've truly seen it all on this project which is what continually makes it so exciting to be a part of.

Safer is great fun to appear in as I play an abundance of characters with a plethora of accents, ranging from RP to Scouse or Estuary English. As an queer individual having fallen out with team sports myself when in my teens due to homophobia, I find telling this story so enriching and have said countless times to the whole team that had I seen a play like Safer when I was growing up and discovering my identity, I'd have benefitted enormously. I can only hope that as we continue to drive the purpose of this piece to each location we perform at, it helps other young people out in terms of their identities and also feeling accepted and included in spaces, such as sports, where we can often feel pushed out of due to societal and historic norms and stereotypes.

ACCESS: Aidan stands wearing a white t-shirt on, also wearing eye glasses. He is pointing into the distance with his left hand. His fellow cast member stands behind him also wearing a white t-shirt and his long hair hanging down beneath his shoulders. He carries a Pride flag which is draped over the top of both of them.
